#FridayReads: August 5

Happy Friday! It’s time for another Friday Reads. Each week I share my Friday read and a review of the previous week’s pick.

There’s no video this week – it was a slump of a week videowise and it just didn’t happen. I promise more videos will be up again next week along with some exciting new projects…so stay tuned!

Even though I didn’t shoot a video, I still wanted to share my Friday Reads with you. So here we go!

Last week, I was reading Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel. I finished it and absolutely loved it. Neuvel tells the story of the giant metal body through interviews and case files, and this format totally worked. I loved the voice of Neuvel’s characters and the use of these files and interviews to move through time. Rather than filling in the gaps, the case files and interviews sometimes skip great periods of time and you as the reader get to figure out what happened in the interval. I thought it was so clever and I am thrilled it is the first of what I think will be a series. The biggest disappointment was the narrator/interviewer, who I never warmed up to. But overall I adored Sleeping Giants and I cannot wait to read more.

And now, on to this week’s Friday reads! I finally picked up my June Book of the Month Pick, Enchanted Islands by Allison Amend. It’s about a woman who is an undercover spy in the Galapagos Islands during WWII. I haven’t gotten super far yet – she’s still a teenager in Minnesota right now – but I’m really liking the style of writing and the voice of Frances.

So that’s all I have for this week’s Friday reads. I really will be back with a video next week, promise! In the meantime, if you have thoughts on either of these picks, or have recommendations for what I should read next, let me know!
